Food warehouses, distribution centres and cold-chain facilities often combine large open rooms with service areas, hygiene zones, offices and equipment rooms. Their wall systems must be planned around cleaning routines, doors, service penetrations and controlled circulation. AAC blocks and ALC panels can both be considered, but the best choice depends on the wall function and the way the facility will be built and operated.
This guide helps project buyers and contractors organise an early wall-system discussion for food and cold-chain facilities. It does not replace the approved architectural, structural, fire or hygienic design for a specific project.
Divide the facility into wall functions
Begin by separating the building into clear wall zones. A cold store may include temperature-controlled rooms, antechambers, loading areas, staff rooms, maintenance spaces and utility rooms. Each zone can have a different opening pattern, service requirement and finishing scope.
Write the wall function beside each line in the inquiry schedule. For example, identify an internal partition, a service-room enclosure or a wall around a loading route. This prevents one general wall quantity from hiding important differences between operating areas.
Consider AAC blocks for adaptable internal layouts
AAC blocks are installed in courses and can be practical where wall lengths change, corners are irregular or the layout includes many smaller rooms. Individual units can make it easier for the site team to coordinate short returns and local adjustments, subject to the approved method and required support details.

Consider ALC panels for regular enclosure areas
ALC panels are larger reinforced elements that may suit long, regular wall runs when the project can coordinate lifting, temporary support and fixing in a defined sequence. They can be considered for enclosure or partition zones where a panel schedule can be prepared before production.
Discuss the installation method together with the panel layout. Confirm the delivery entrance, lifting route, storage surface, equipment access and the order in which panels will be installed. A panel schedule should identify approximate lengths, heights, openings and edge conditions rather than only a total area.
Coordinate hygienic finishes and cleanability
Food-related facilities usually require the project team to think carefully about cleanability, joints, corners and interfaces with floors and ceilings. Ask the designer to define the approved finish for each room and to show how it meets doors, equipment bases and adjacent surfaces.
A wall finish may differ between a dry store, a staff area and a wash-down zone. Do not assume that one finish or sealant is suitable for every room. List the finishing scope separately in the quotation so that exclusions are visible.
Map doors, shutters and loading interfaces
Cold-chain projects often contain personnel doors, larger goods doors, roller shutters and air-lock arrangements. Record the clear opening, frame or shutter type, head height, threshold and finished floor level for each opening.
For AAC blocks, coordinate the opening support and the surrounding masonry sequence. For ALC panels, show openings and edge conditions in the panel schedule. Review door spacing and equipment clearance together, because a wall may also need to accommodate rails, bumpers or service access.
Reserve service routes before walls are closed
Mark electrical conduits, lighting controls, refrigeration services, drainage routes, ventilation and equipment supports before final quantities are issued. Separate small service chases from large penetrations that require a designed opening or support.
Any cutting, drilling or fixing should follow the approved installation method. Keep penetrations away from connection zones and confirm how the opening will be sealed and finished. A coordinated services drawing reduces the risk of late changes after the wall has been completed.
Plan the site sequence around operations
Many food and logistics facilities are built beside active storage or delivery operations. Record working-hour restrictions, hygiene controls, temporary separation, access routes and areas where materials can be stored safely.
For ALC panels, include lifting windows, temporary stability and protection from impact. For AAC blocks, plan pallet locations, mixing areas and the route for moving units to each wall line. A phased delivery may be more practical than bringing all materials to site at once.
Prepare comparable quantities and accessories

For ALC panels, provide a preliminary panel schedule and state whether the quotation is based on square metres, individual panels or another unit. List anchors, joint materials, lifting accessories, trims and finishes as separate items where applicable.
Send a complete inquiry to the supplier
