How to Plan AAC and ALC Wall Interfaces Around Doors and Services

Wall interfaces are where many AAC and ALC installation questions become practical site issues. Doors, service routes, columns, beams and finished floors all meet the wall at a small number of details. If those details are left until materials arrive, the project may face cutting, rework or delays. A short interface schedule prepared before ordering helps contractors, consultants and suppliers work from the same information.

This guide explains how to organise those interfaces for AAC block masonry and ALC panel partitions. It is a planning document, not a substitute for approved drawings, local codes or the responsible engineer's details.

Map every wall interface before ordering

Start with a plan showing each wall line, its purpose and the structure around it. Mark columns, beams, slabs, existing walls, movement joints and areas where the wall changes direction. Give each wall line a simple reference such as W-01 or P-03. This makes later discussions about quantities, openings and accessories much clearer.

Separate internal partitions from external or enclosure walls. They may have different finishing, movement and connection requirements. A warehouse, villa or commercial building can contain several wall conditions even when one product family is selected.

Coordinate door openings early

Record the clear opening, frame type, sill or threshold condition and head height for every door. Also record whether the frame is installed before or after the wall. For AAC blocks, the opening may require a planned lintel or other approved support detail. For ALC panels, the panel schedule should show the opening position, edge conditions and any required support or connection detail.

Do not rely only on a rough opening width. Check the finished floor level, door swing, frame fixing zone and the clearance needed for sealants or trims. If several doors share one wall line, review their spacing together rather than treating each opening as an isolated item.

Reserve routes for electrical and mechanical services

Ask the services team to mark conduits, boxes, pipes, ventilation routes and equipment supports before final wall quantities are released. Group repeated routes where possible and identify any large penetration that cannot be formed by normal site work.

Small service chases may be coordinated differently from large openings. The important point is to agree the permitted location, depth and finishing method in the project documents. Cutting or drilling should follow the approved installation method and should not remove material needed for a connection, support or edge condition.

Check columns, beams and slab edges

Walls often meet reinforced concrete columns or beams with different tolerances and movement behaviour. Show these junctions on the wall layout and specify how the gap, restraint or finish will be treated. The detail may involve a compatible connector, sealant, mesh or other approved accessory, depending on the design.

At the top of a partition, confirm whether the wall runs tight to the structure or needs a designed allowance. At the base, check the floor tolerance, damp condition and finished floor build-up. A clear base detail prevents the first course or panel line from being set at the wrong level.

Choose a practical installation sequence

Interface details are easier to control when the sequence is written down. A typical sequence may include setting out, preparing the base, installing blocks or panels, coordinating services, completing approved joints and applying finishes. The actual order depends on the project and should follow the construction drawings.

Keep the quantity schedule interface-specific

Prepare quantities by wall reference and thickness rather than one combined total. List doors, large penetrations, corners, returns and special pieces separately. For AAC blocks, show gross area, deductions and the unit basis used for the estimate. For ALC panels, provide an approximate panel schedule with lengths, heights and openings.

Include finishes and protection in the interface review

Finishes can change the apparent opening size and the way a wall meets a frame or adjacent surface. Confirm the proposed render, plaster, joint treatment, sealant, trims and impact protection. In service rooms or busy industrial areas, ask whether the wall needs a more robust protective finish around corners and equipment.

Do not assume that a finish used on a plain wall automatically suits a door reveal, panel joint or service penetration. Request a typical detail for each recurring condition and identify who supplies each accessory.

Turn the review into a supplier-ready request

Send the supplier a marked-up plan, wall schedule, opening list, approximate quantities, delivery location and target installation period. State whether the project needs AAC blocks, ALC panels or a comparison of both. Include questions about packing, accessories and delivery documents so the commercial scope is visible.
